Doonesbury: "Pimp my gimp"
Kes: I've been following the storyline about B.D. and his disability for two and a half years now, ever since the Boston Globe censored the strip in which B.D. gives a verbal response to waking up in a military hospital with one leg missing.

One of the aspects I find interesting is B.D.'s prosthetic, especially as one of my disability-related interests is the way in which people personalize their prosthetics and other tech. Someone posted the following to the Disability in the Humanities mailing list. The final line of the strip reminds me of when I was getting my first matched pair of prosthetic eyes and I voiced a desire for a set with little flames on them, a la The Corinthian.

Clicking on the most recent strip, and then clicking the "previous" button right above the strip allows you to flip through the series.

Here's an (amateur) visual description of the first episode in the series:
In the first frame, a young woman asks her mother "you seen dad?" The two characters are standing in a kitchen. Both are blonde and informally dressed.
The mother answers, "He went down to Benny's chopper shop."
In the next frame, we get a side-view of the two characters. The daughter says, "Oh no...he's not getting a bike is he?"
The mother replies, "No, no, just a paint job."
In the third frame, we see a close-up of the mother, saying, "He wants to customize the spare c-leg he wears to practice."
In the final frame, we see the father speaking with Benny at the chop-shop. He holds his c-leg upside down in front of him. We see him only from the waist
up. His leg is metal, with a white sock, and it has a sports shoe on it. Benny, dressed in a tank top, bald, with a pony tail and goatee, replies, "Here
for you dude. Flames, skulls, Elvis, you name it!"

I've been meaning to mention this to you, but kept forgetting. If you want me to read the sequence to you, just ask.

This culture isn't big on decorating things. Many of my friends have seemingly been mystified that I might want stars on my car. Their reaction seems quite peculiar to me.

With prosthetics, I'm sure the problem is worse, because decorating them enhances the "this is not flesh" aspect, which some folks may feel is rocking the boat of allowing "society" to ignore the prosthetic.

Flames on your eyes sounds fine to me. There are ornamental contact lenses, after all, for those with orignal eyeballs; why shouldn't you have flames if you want them? Although I think silver mirror eyes would be way cool.

Silver mirrored eyes were my second choice, or maybe evil-Willow black.
