Software lets Canon digital cameras operate as book scaning devices
Posted to the Book People Mailing list, I haven't heard about it nor had time to check it out, so I can neither recommend nor disrecommend it:

I am Art Sarasin, president of Atiz Innovation Inc.

Because we want to make most productive book scanning available to everyone
(starting from medium to small-sized schools, colleges and libraries) so
there are more ebooks made available online, we created a product to make
that possible.

It is called "BookDrive DIY". It is a platform that allows users to turn
Canon digital cameras into a very low-cost, but hi-performance book scanning
station that can capture book pages at as fast as 1,800 pages an hour!
This would be extremely helpful for libraries and people around the world
who are working to make a virtual library to all human knowledge become
real.

Bodleian Library goes Google
From the Book People mailing list:

I was just in Oxford last week for the Third International Conference on
the Book and heard Ronald Milne, acting director of the Bodleian Library
talk about their digitization project with Google. It was eye-opening to
say the least, because I've been hearing that the project is stalled in
legalities, but somebody forgot to tell the Bodleian that, because
they're ready to start scanning in the next week or so. It will be full
image in the manner of JSTOR, and this will be quite exciting because
their target group of a million 19th century titles includes a number of
Kelmscott press books and the lavishly illustrated travel books of Sir
Richard Burton. A full report of this can be found on my blog at:
